Southeast of Patras, on a lush green hill, the Achaia Clauss winery is considered the first organized winery in Greece, with its origins dating back to 1861.
In 1854, Gustav Clauss arrived in Patras to work for a German raisin export company, and fascinated by the city and the rich taste of its vines, decided to set up a wine community. Seven years later, he had completed an entire residential complex with stone cellars, paved streets between cathedral towers and the necessary facilities.
Since then, some of the most famous wines, with Mavrodaphne and Demesticha being the most prominent, have been produced here. The company, which came under Greek ownership in 1919, gradually upgraded its infrastructure and the technical methods of winemaking, which allowed it to develop into an international wine point of reference.
The famous complex can be visited for guided tours, tastings and educational tours, being an attractive sight and a monument to the history of wine. A tour of the Oinokastro (wine castle) includes the vineyards, towers, cellars, chapels, busts, traditional tools, awards from all over the world and books, in addition to the imperial cellar, the Wine Museum and the Barrel Museum.
